Future Law innovates on how law is developed, practiced and used to address pressing global challenges (see www.futurelaw.org).

We invite aspiring legal changemakers to apply for our Malaysian and International Fellowship programmes, which will run for a minimum period of six weeks starting on 1 July 2019. This is an excellent opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience with environmental and sustainability issues and broaden your horizons in a unique and supportive environment.

Both groups of Fellows will work to innovate on how law is made, learnt and communicated through the conceptualisation and prototyping of the Sabah Environmental Law Initiative. Fellows will also be provided an interactive seminar course on legal and political ecology at no cost.

The Malaysian and International programmes will be integrated to promote cross-cultural learning. Fellows will be based in Kota Kinabalu (Sabah, East Malaysia).

Malaysian Programme

We invite applications from Malaysian law students and young lawyers under 30. We particularly encourage applications from Sabahans and people who identify as Indigenous.

There are no fees for the Fellowship. Fellows are generally responsible for their own costs and travel and accommodation arrangements. Stipends are available on a financial needs basis.

International Programme

We invite applications from law students and young lawyers under 30 who are nationals of countries other than Malaysia.

There are no fees for the Fellowship. Fellows are responsible for their own costs, including travel and accommodation arrangements.

Applications and deadlines

For either programme, please submit a motivation letter, your CV/resume and two pieces of your written work to Harry Jonas by email by 16 March 2019.

Your motivation letter should include (at minimum) your interests and career plans, why you want to become a Future Law Fellow, relevant experience and skills, timeframe of availability between July and August 2019 and contact details. If you are applying for the Malaysian programme, please also indicate if would like to request a stipend on the basis of financial need.

We expect to conduct interviews with shortlisted candidates and notify successful applicants by the end of March. If you have any questions, please contact us.
